What to Bring to Acklins Island

• Sunscreen
  The sun is especially strong in this part of the world. Bring an ample amount high S.P.F sunblock, it is essential for avoiding serious sunburn. Make sure to wear plenty the first few days to assure your skin has a chance to adjust to the intense sun.
• A good sun hat
• A very good pair of Polaroid glasses
  The fish are hard to see and the sunrays are intense. Go to your local fly tackle shop and spend the money on a high-end pair of Polaroid sunglasses. A back up pair of less expensive glasses is a good idea as well.
• Shorts
  Lightweight, quick drying shorts that are good for wading the flats. Patagonia, Columbia, and Ex-Officio are all popular brands that make a good wading short.
• Long nylon flats pants
• Fishing shirts
  Both short and long sleeve, light weight, breathable fishing and sun shirts.
• Tackle fanny pack for the flats
• Clippers and pliers
• Fly rods
  7, 8, and 9 weight rods are the most commonly used bonefish rods. A 9 foot 8 weight that can load for shorter wade fishing situations is best. We recommend a 10 weight for Permit, and a 12 weight for Tarpon.
• Reels
  A reel with a good disk drag system is important. The reel should have at least 150 yards of backing and a weight forward, floating, bonefish line.
• Flies
  The classic shrimp and minnow bonefish patterns such as Charlies and Gotchas in tan and pink are tough to beat. Size #6 is the most popular size. It is a pleasant fact however that any bonefish pattern in sizes 4, 6, and 8 is worth giving a try on Acklins flats. Concentrate on patterns with medium to lightweight. A few flies with dumbbell lead eyes are O.K., but generally lightweight flies are the best.
• Leaders and Tippet
  9 foot bonefish leaders with spools of 8, 10, and 12 pound tippet. A few steel tippet leaders for Barracuda and Sharks is a good idea as well.
• Flats Boots
  Simms and Patagonia both make a good product. Make sure to wear socks under your boots to prevent chafing.
• Mosquito repellant
• Cortisone cream and anti itch Benadryl gel
• Comfortable and casual, tropical dinner attire
• Tevas or sandals
• Rain Jacket
